Friday Update

Hello Colorado Multisport Faithful!!

Despite some of the winter weather we've been having here in the multisport mecca of Boulder, we have been staying very busy at CMS. We are making some exciting changes in a few key areas, all in an effort to remain at the forefront of everything triathlon, and provide you with the best experience possible.

First big news item: Colorado Multisport is now a GURU Dealer! There is no better place on the planet to go than CMS to make the bike of your dreams a reality. For more information on these Canadian masterpieces, visit the GURU website.

We are starting to see the first 2010 product trickle through the door. We do however have some 2009 product still available at very attractive savings. If you're in the market, or you've been thinking about making that new tri bike a reality, now is the best time to get the process started. Call us or stop by the Studio today!

Holiday gifts and goodies are starting to find their way to CMS as well. We want to be your Holiday Headquarters, and to that end we are going to be making it easier than ever to guarantee that Santa puts exactly what you want under the tree. Stop by today to fill out your 'Triathlon Wish List' with what you're hoping to find come this Hannukah, Christmas, or Kwanza. Your loved one can then call, email, or stop by the store and we will help them make the right purchasing decision for your triathlon gifts! And if you don't have a chance to fill out the Wish List, be sure to send friends and loved ones our way in any case, because we'll have all the fun stocking stuffers (and larger!) easily labeled and listed at prices from $10 on up!

We'd like to give a huge shout out to all of our wonderful athletes who took on the Ironman 70.3 World Championships recently in Clearwater, Florida. CMS friend Julie Dibens took top honors, winning her first 70.3 World Championship for the women, with CMS friend and athlete Joe Gambles finishing an incredible 5th place for the men. Many other CMS athletes took part in this event and we are so proud of you all!

Coming up this weekend is the Ironman Arizona triathlon in Tempe, AZ. We'd like to wish all of our friends and athletes best wishes and fast racing. No doubt we will be following along with your progress as the day unfolds!

Friday Update

There are some big events taking place around the country this weekend in the world of multisport:

The Longhorn 70.3 event is this Sunday in Austin, Texas. CMS would like to wish all of our athletes the best of luck competing there, make Colorado proud!

Colorado Multisport's own Ryan Ignatz, bike-fitter extraordinaire is racing the XTERRA World Championship on the island of Maui, Hawaii, this weekend. Ryan doubles as a world-class off-road triathlete while he isn't busy helping others achieve their triathlon dreams as a bike fit guru here at CMS. We'd like to offer our best wishes to all of the other phenomenal athletes competing there including Rife Hilgartner, Sandi Garcia, and Julie Dibens!!

In racing closer to home, Boulder Racing is putting on the third race of their popular cyclocross series right here in Boulder at a venue familiar to all triathletes: Boulder Reservoir. Racing will be taking place all day this Sunday. Everyone should come out and either participate or spectate and catch the cyclocross bug. No better way to keep your fitness through the Fall and early Winter!!

Come one, come all: Colorado Multisport's own Blake Ottersberg is leading skill-development Cyclocross rides from the CMS/Sports Garage parking lot every Tuesday morning at 7:30am. Bring your 'cross or mountain bike and join in the fun!

Registration has officially opened (a few weeks ago at this point!) for the 2010 Boulder Triathlon Series, including the 5430 Sprint, Boulder Peak, and the Ironman 70.3 Boulder!! Don't miss out on your chance to participate in one of the best multisport experiences around next year! The Series website can be found here.

In related non-multisport news, election day is fast approaching, and CMS friend Barry Siff is up for Boulder City Council. Regardless of who you are voting for, make sure you make your voice heard and VOTE!!

Interbike Report

This past week I [Geoff] was fortunate enough to attend the Interbike trade show in Las Vegas. This year's show seemed a bit more subdued than in years past: most of what is coming down the industry pipeline is already out, or we've already seen it and know it is on the way. Nonetheless, it was the products that lurk just below the surface of the cycling heavy-hitters that were the highlight of Interbike this year.

Interbike is in fact a week-long show, with two days of Dirt Demo just outside Las Vegas held in the famous Bootleg Canyon trail system. While many manufacturers bring road and TT/triathlon bikes for demo, the 'course' that is set up lacks inspiration. If doing circles on a paved service road tickles your fancy, then road cycling at Dirt Demo would be your Shangri-La. The mountain biking, on the other hand, is at the opposite end of the spectrum. I'm green in Colorado with regard to my MTB riding, but used to mix it up with the local crew on a regular basis back East. The trails in Bootleg are a mix of loose, sandy and rocky sections intertwined with sweet rock drop offs and fast berms. With my recent CX riding I was a fairly quick study to keep up with my riding mates at the Demo. I was able to ride both a Santa Cruz Blur LT and a Rocky Mountain Altitude 70, both available from our sister shop Sports Garage, and neither bike disappointed.

The next day at the show was fruitful to say the least. I was heading out the following morning on a 6:45am flight, so had to make the most of my time. We had some very productive meetings with some key players in various aspects of the cycling and triathlon industry, and needless to say you can expect Colorado Multisport to be on the forefront of what is cool and hot and continue to supply you with those items that you just can't live without. Below is just a handful of the highlights of the show. Enjoy!!

The new Guru Crono 2.0 was a show-stopper. $4500 for a custom carbon frame and fork, tailored to your every individual need right down to the color scheme.
The Garmin 500 is a new Ant+ cycling computer with GPS functionality that can also display power data from most popular power meters.
The new Focus TT bike was designed by Walser, who are famous for making bikes that other companies labeled as their own to have their Protour teams race (Gerolsteiner and Jan Ullrich both rode Walsers that were labeled as Specialized and Bianchi respectively in the Tour de France).
The new Focus TT bike had this rather interesting and aero looking fork from 3T. The very thin fork legs are to increase aerodynamic efficiency.
The Focus TT bike also had this innovative rear derailleur setup, with the cable housing exiting the razor-thin seat stays just above the quick release. Very trick.
The LOOK 596 comes available with a standard stem option and no Zed crank for 2010, while the original 596 complete with Zed and integrated stem gets a color and graphics update.
Specialized had their new Shiv on display, but not in a place that allowed easy access to the punters.
The Specialized aero helmet will finally be available to the masses for 2010. Look for the first ones to hit stores in the next couple of months. CMS will be sure to have them so stop by and check them out!
One of the best things about Interbike is when manufacturers brings superstars' bikes for all to inspect. This one is a Scott that belongs to sprint ace Mark Cavendish, in case you couldn't figure, it's been nicely labeled!
Bamboo is the new titanium. There were bikes all over the place that would make a panda drool, this one happened to catch my eye as it's a cyclocross bike. COOL!
You would be forgiven for not identifying this muddy bike as a Kuota Kross. The Italian firm cleverly disguised this one in a thick layer of mud and leaves. Ha ha, that's just like cyclocross!!
CMS friend and triathlon superstar Matt Reed was at the Interbike show, if not in person as a life-size advert for the Fuji D6, which is offered in a Matty Reed Signature Edition.
Mavic had these cool triathlon kicks on display. Two-strap design with a heel loop for easy on and off, and a bright yellow color-way will make these attention grabbers at any race.
Vision had this new UCI compliant base bar on display at their booth. Many manufacturers have been left scrambling for the drawing board as the heads of International Cycling have decided to re-interpret a rule that was already on the books, necessitating design changes to many of the aero goodies for 2010.
Day 1 of the Interbike trade show concluded with a hotly contested CrossVegas cyclocross race. CMS friend and clothing supplier Champion System actually flew in a flotilla of Belgian superstars to compete, including 3-time World Champion Erwin Vervecken. The American superstars put on a show of force in front of an appreciative crowd, defending the homeland and taking 4 of the top 5 places. A good time was had by all!

A Decade of Multisport

It's been ten years this fall since I became a runner. Then a cyclist. And a swimmer.

One beautiful morning in Georgetown, the leafy northwest quadrant of Washington, D.C., I ran my first 10k. It was also my first competitive running race. I finished feeling great and couldn't believe what a fun, optimistic, good looking crew had assembled on a Sunday morning to run hard and then drink beer before 10 AM on the edge of the Potomac River. Normally me and my friends would be sleeping off our hangovers at this time. I was 22 and hooked on the lifestyle.

Running was the gateway drug for me. Pretty soon I was riding to work to get more training time in as I prepped for my first marathon. Then I needed to learn how to fix my bike, which was getting a lot of miles on it, so I began moonlighting from my research job in international finance at a triathlon bike shop in Northern Virginia. I was running and riding so much I figured I might as well learn to swim and give triathlon a shot. Nine years ago today, on my 23rd birthday, I did my first triathlon in Sea Colony, Delaware.

Fast forward through my move to Boulder, full time Ironman training, learning the ropes of the cycling industry at Sports Garage, business school, and then the opening of Colorado Multisport in February of 2006. The multisport lifestyle consumed my life and my work. How lucky I am to have that opportunity!

What makes me reflect on this is the fact that I raced in the Oktoberfest Triathlon this past weekend. The race was produced by Without Limits, a two year old company founded by the Panigutti brothers, one of whom, Lance, is a former CMS athlete-scholar. Lance and his crew did a fantastic job on the race, sponsored by Colorado Multisport and others.

Once again, ten years later, I had the feeling of being amazed at all the wonderful people assembled on a beautiful fall morning. Customers, sponsored CMS athletes (including overall winner Kirk Nelson and a whole bunch of CU triathletes), other vendors -- it seems like I knew nearly everyone at the race. How lucky I felt to be surrounded by healthy, happy friends.

I don't race as much as many folks, but in 10 years I've indulged in 13 triathlons, 18 running races including 4 marathons, a bunch of mountain and road bike races including the Vail Ultra 100, and thousands upon thousands of training strides, revolutions, and strokes.

Thank you to the Colorado Multisport community for keeping me healthy, happy and addicted.

Two World Champions at our booth...how awesome!

Olympian and 2x Xterra World Champion Julie Dibens along with 2008
70.3 amateur World Champion turned professional this year stopping by
to say hi. These are two of the most personable and humble women in
the sport. Thank you to both of them for posing together and taking
the time to hang out with us. We wish them the best of luck tomorrow
at the 5430 long course triathlon.

A Beautiful Boulder Morning

We recently took the opportunity to enjoy a great Boulder triathlon style morning. Boulder Aquatic Masters or BAM puts on open water swims every Tue and Thur around 6:15am on the west side of Boulder Reservoir. We were out there putting on a wetsuit demo day during one of the sessions. The weather was perfect. A crisp, calm morning with suprisingly warm (66-67 deg) early June water temp. I (Ryan) even got a lap in the water before setting out to ride the famous Boulder Peak course and had the pleasure of riding with one of our most spirited and upbeat customers, Ellen Hart. She is a one of the top amateur women in her age group and can definitely out run most women, and men, younger than her. Her background is in running, but has really picked up the bike leg and often puts out some fast splits on her new Ordu. Thanks Ellen for the fun ride and good luck leading up to Kona this year. If you happen to run into Ellen, enjoy her spirit and great personality, and hopefully some of her speed will rub off on you as well.

CMS at the Summer Open Sprint Triathlon

Colorado Multisport was out in FORCE this morning at the Summer Open Sprint Triathlon in Longmont, Colorado earlier today! Virtually the entire staff participated, and we had a great time enjoying the competition with many of our favorite people in the world: our customers!!

Conditions were perfect with water temps hovering around 60 degrees, air temps in the low 70's with no wind, and beautiful blue skies overhead. The Without Limits crew again put on a stellar race, and managed to close the ENTIRE bike course to traffic!!! Way to go, guys!

CMS Manager Ryan Ignatz won the race overall, with Fitter and Sales Manager Geoff Nenninger following close behind in 4th. Aaron Hersh and Blake Ottersberg crossed the line soon after.

We'll post the rest of the results as soon as they are available.

JZ stops by for some TLC

Joanna Zeiger stopped by to get her bikes dialed in to her CMS fit numbers. We have World Champions come by every day, but who we'd REALLY like to help is YOU!!!

World Champion Triathlete Julie Dibens gets a Fit

Julie Dibens, who now resides in Boulder, stopped in for a time trial fitting yesterday to get her position dialed in. She is such a tough individual that she even came in with a broken rib or two that she got from a bad crash at XTERRA Saipan. What a Champ.

The scary thing about partnering up with her new sposor Trek bikes and getting a good fit is that I know she is going to actually be faster. Watch for her throughout this season for some big finishes.

Additionally, Julie is such a nice peson and really fun to hang out with if you ever get the chance.

Thank you Julie for the fun fit session!

CMS News and Happenings

We're busy getting ready for our next big event here at CMS, which is coming up very quickly. We're hosting a P4 Launch Party on the evening of the 19th, next Thursday, at 7pm. We should have a P4 or two available for demo rides on both Friday and Saturday. If you're one of the first 50 people to register for the event either by calling the store at 303-865-4604, or online at coloradomultisport.com you will receive a commemorative VIP gift set and will get priority for scheduling a demo ride on either Friday or Saturday! Believe me, you'll want one of those gift packs!!! Very cool, indeed.

To get you excited about what you might encounter at the P4 launch other than a really incredible new bike, some free food and drinks (including our soon-to-be World Famous Nuun-tinis), here's a picture from the Pow Wow we hosted last month of 70.3 World Champion Mirinda Carfrae and Xterra World Champion and Olympian Julie Dibens. They both made surprise appearances because, like you, they're a part of the CMS family!

Custom clothing is well on the way. Our first order has been processed buy we are already taking deposits for the next order. We should have a limited amount of bike jerseys and shorts for stock, but the best way to guarantee that you'll get the clothing in the size that you want, or to get other items like jackets, tights, etc., is to pre-order.

The local Blue bicycles rep came by to show off the special Nascar edition Triad that is being featured in the latest edition of Triathlete Magazine. Very cool paintjob that Troy Lee Designs did for this one-off creation. If you would like a cool custom bike of your own, remember that Colorado Multisport is your friendly local Elite Bicycles dealer and we would love to deck out a custom Elite for you, because you are a beautiful snowflake and you deserve it!! We had the pleasure of talking with Elite's very own David Greenfield yesterday and it sounds like, as always, they are up to some amazing new things!

New Year's News from CMS!

Well, it has been a while since the last you heard from us. We hope everyone had a festive holiday season and has started 2009 in good health and spirits. A lot has been going on here at CMS, we'll fill you in on some exciting happenings so that you're in the loop.

CMS is proud to have formed a partnership with none other than 5-time World Champion Simon Lessing and his Boulder Coaching group. Simon is also leading a new trainer class at Flatiron Athletic Club at 7am on Monday mornings. Bring your own bike and trainer and a towel and get ready to get fast! The whole CMS crew will be attending on a regular basis, hoping that Simon's wisdom and mere presence will whip us into shape. You should really consider joining us in the suffering! Members of FAC get in free or a $15 drop-in fee is all it takes for non-members to join in the fun. Call us here at the shop at 303-865-4604 or get in touch with FAC for more details.

ECONOMIC RELIEF EFFORT: For a limited time we are offering BOGO fitting services. If you are a subscriber to our monthly 'Love Letter' email, you already knew that! You need to call to schedule by the 15th of January, and the fits must take place before the 15th of February. This is just like at the grocery store: when you buy one, you'll get the second of equal or lesser value at no additional cost! If you have a road and a triathlon bike to get dialed in, or you want to surprise that special someone with a fit AND get one for yourself, now is the perfect time to save some cash!

Speaking of fitting, we've had the pleasure of working with some of top athletes this past month. Both the Women's Professional and Women's Amateur 2008 Hawaii Ironman World Champions came in for some fit work this past month. We are so fortunate to be located in the hub of triathlon activity and get to work with such accomplished athletes. However, our passion is helping EVERYONE, regardless of your pedigree, to achieve your triathlon dreams. Don't hesitate to contact us to get started on the right path today.

If you do want to take advantage of our legendary fitting services, our calendar is starting to fill up, so you'll want to schedule your fit about a week in advance. That isn't very long to wait to achieve tri-bike riding bliss, and is still quick turnaround to what you might expect during the spring and summer.

In other news, we'll soon be posting more information on some Colorado Multisport branded cycling and triathlon apparel. Here's what we know so far: The first product will be very limited edition, and will be done on a mostly pre-order basis. We'll get in a small number of items for stock, but if you want to show the world your style and good taste as a member of the CMS family then be sure to let us know that you'd like to reserve a kit. We will have a really good selection of products for you to choose from if you get in on the pre-order, everything from standard jerseys and shorts to thermal vests, jackets, tri-shorts and tops, as well as some casual wear for you to lounge around in and still show your CMS love! Plus, everyone who pre-orders will save some cash from the normal retail prices. Stay tuned in the next few days for some sketches of what the kits will look like and more information!

More apparel news: we still have a great selection of F4 Team kits in stock and ready to go. Call or stop by to check if we have your size in stock. Jackets are still a $30 savings at $100. Quite a deal to stay warm this winter AND look good!

LOOK Bicycle update: We expect our first shipment of LOOK 576 bicycles to be arriving sometime in the next 2 weeks. We are very excited to be Colorado's newest LOOK dealer and can't wait to receive these bikes and have them available to you. We currently have a 576 demo bike on the floor for those of you who haven't been by to check it out, it is a head-turner! We also are expecting the first of the top-of-the-line 596 frames to arrive in short order as well. We'll keep you posted.

We do still have a small selection of 2008 bicycles on closeout, so don't hesitate to call and see if we have the bike you've been wanting at HUGE savings. The selection is small, but you might just score a jackpot and get the bike you've been dreaming of at a great price. What a way to start the New Year off right!!

Speaking of cool bicycles, we've started to see the 2009 Cervelo model line roll into CMS. If you're looking for the latest and greatest from one of the best in the business, call us today to help you get set up on one of these super-bikes.

That's it for this update, stay tuned as we'll be updating our blog on a regular basis from here on out. (New Year's resolution!)
